Water for Healthy Living
Water forms the fundamental chemical substance for the survival of all living forms on earth. From the physiological standpoint, water has unique properties that make it certainly important. Our human brain comprises of 95 % water, blood 82 % and lungs 90 %. Therefore approximately 60- 70 % of human body is composed of water. But this is continuously lost through dehydration, urine, bowel movements, environmental conditions, health conditions and exercise which is why it becomes a need to continuously replenish our body with water for a smoother and healthier life style. A mere 2% drop in our body’s water supply can trigger signs of dehydration. Do not wait until you get thirsty. Spread you water intake throughout the day.
Role of water:
1. It has a unique ability to dissolve in many different substances. It has the natural tendency to dissolve the cell components like proteins, DNA and polysaccharides which is why water becomes vital for many metabolic processes within the body.
2. Water metabolizes starches, triglycerides and proteins for storage of fuels and information and glucose, fatty acids and amino acids to be used for fuels for energy.
3. It is central to acid-base neutralization and enzyme function.
4. Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for the tissues.
5. It makes skin look younger and cleaner by flushing out impurities.
6. It helps in weight loss and improves muscle tone.
7. Water regulates the body temperature, as the cooling and heating is distributed through perspiration.
8. Water helps to alleviate constipation by moving food through the intestinal tract and thereby eliminating waste.
Ways to hydrate our body:
- Drink a glass of water with each meal and after each meal.
- Hydrate before, during and after exercise.
- Substitute sparkling water/juices for alcoholic drinks.
- Eat at least 3 servings of 3 different types of fruits. Fruits have water naturally present in them.
Note: Drink at least 8- 10 glasses of water daily. Spread it throughout the day. You can definitely have more water because there is no hard and fast rule that says you should take specified amount. More water intake is always beneficial.
