It seems that everyone is concerned with healthy living these days. This is a good thing; it is important to be concerned with your health and to look for better strategies to improve your life. On the other hand, it also seems like everyone has a quick solution for healthy living, for a hefty fee of course. It seems at times that you can’t turn on the television or open a magazine without seeing a celebrity or doctor trying to get you to buy their new book detailing the latest miracle diet that will change your life, whether it is fresh ground wheat grass or a daily tin of Brazil nuts. The reality is that these diets are unnecessary. Healthy living is available to everyone, and does not depend on buying the latest diet book or the most expensive vitamins. All that you need to do is to start making healthy decisions.

How to eat healthy

The most important facet of your life that you need to change as you move towards healthy living is to start eating nutritious foods. Do not try to follow a trendy diet, just eat a balanced diet of nutritious foods. When you eat well, you lower your risk of many health problems such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain kinds of cancer and osteoporosis. You will also give yourself more energy, allowing you to enjoy life again.

The most important group of foods, and the one that is most often the cause of poor diets, is fruit and vegetables. There is nothing particularly innovative about this advice; everyone knows that you need to eat your fruit and vegetables. The main problem is that so few people actually consume the seven to ten daily servings of fruits and vegetables they are supposed to have each day. And when they do eat fruit and vegetables, it is in forms that include added sugar, salt or fat.

The food group that we all eat too much of is meat. Try to limit your meat intake, and emphasize meat alternatives for your protein needs. While you definitely need meat or an alternative for the protein, most people eat far too much from this food group. You will be surprised at how little is actually required to get you through the day.

Get active

Once you have started eating well, it is time to go out and get some physical activity! Now, this does not mean that you have to incorporate a rigorous physical workout into your daily routine. Just including small amounts of physical activity in your life will make a difference. So take the stairs instead of the escalator, or walk to the corner store instead of driving four blocks. Start slowly and incorporate more physical activity into your life, and you will be amazed at how quickly the results will add up.

Have fun

The final component of healthy living is to have a healthy mind. Build up a strong peer group who will give you the social support you need to be truly happy. This will reduce your stress, which will only lead to a healthier body.

Whatever your blood cholesterol level, you can make changes to help lower it or keep it low and reduce your risk for heart disease. These are guidelines for heart-healthy living that the whole family (including children ages 2 and above) can follow:
1) Choose foods low in saturated fat. All foods that contain fat are made up of a mixture of saturated and unsaturated fats. Saturated fat raises your blood cholesterol level more than anything else you eat. The best way to reduce blood cholesterol is to choose foods lower in saturated fat. One way to help your family do this is by choosing foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains–foods naturally low in total fat and high in starch and fiber.

2) Choose foods low in total fat. Since many foods high in total fat are also high in saturated fat, eating foods low in total fat will help your family eat less saturated fat. When you do eat fat, substitute unsaturated fat–either polyunsaturated or monounsaturated–for saturated fat. Fat is a rich source of calories, so eating foods low in fat will also help you eat fewer calories. Eating fewer calories can help you lose weight–and, if you are overweight, losing weight is an important part of lowering your blood cholesterol. (Consult your family doctor if you have a concern about your child’s weight.)

3) Choose foods high in starch and fiber. Foods high in starch and fiber are excellent substitutes for foods high in saturated fat. These foods–breads, cereals, pasta, grains, fruits, and vegetables–are low in saturated fat and cholesterol. They are also lower in calories than foods that are high in fat. But limit fatty toppings and spreads like butter and sauces made with cream and whole milk dairy products. Foods high in starch and fiber are also good sources of vitamins and minerals.
When eaten as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, foods with soluble fiber–like oat and barley bran and dry peas and beans–may help to lower blood cholesterol.

4) Choose foods low in cholesterol. Remember, dietary cholesterol can raise blood cholesterol, although usually not as much as saturated fat. So it’s important for your family to choose foods low in dietary cholesterol. Dietary cholesterol is found only in foods that come from animals. And even if an animal food is low in saturated fat, it may be high in cholesterol; for instance, organ meats like liver and egg yolks are low in saturated fat but high in cholesterol. Egg whites and foods from plant sources do not have cholesterol.

5) Be more physically active. Being physically active helps improve blood cholesterol levels: it can raise HDL and lower LDL. Being more active also can help you lose weight, lower your blood pressure, improve the fitness of your heart and blood vessels, and reduce stress. And being active together is great for the entire family.

6) Maintain a healthy weight, and lose weight if you are overweight. People who are overweight tend to have higher blood cholesterol levels than people of a healthy weight. Overweight adults with an “apple” shape–bigger (pot) belly–tend to have a higher risk for heart disease than those with a “pear” shape–bigger hips and thighs.

Whatever your body shape, when you cut the fat in your diet, you cut down on the richest source of calories. A family eating pattern high in starch and fiber instead of fat is a good way to help control weight. Do not go on crash diets that are very low in calories since they can be harmful to your health. If you are overweight, losing even a little weight can help to lower LDL-cholesterol and raise HDL-cholesterol.

Probiotics are beneficial cultures that, when eaten in adequate amounts, can truly help improve our digestive health, promote regularity and enhance our immune system, thereby, benefiting our general health in numerous ways.

Probiotics can be taken in gel-cap form or enter our system by eating foods that have probiotics added to them. The interesting thing is that we need to know just how much we need per serving, which is something that has a least a billion bacteria per serving. To help your digestive system, it is necessary to look for those products that have been labelled with the type and the amount of live bacteria in them. Strains of Bifdobacterium and Lactobacillus have been shown by researchers to be of some benefit. But, if you stick to the billion bacteria per serving, you will be doing yourself and your system a real favor.

You may ask, why probiotics? Although we have millions of good bacteria living in our body, we need to have these good bacteria replenished when the body is in exhaust mode, and our digestive system seems to be needing help. By adding gut-friendly bacteria to our systems, the Canadian Research and Development Center for Probiotics, says we can aid digestion, prevent diarrhea and reduce the symptoms of lactose intolerance.

Our own friendly bacteria can be drastically reduce by antibiotics, gastrointestinal illnesses, bad bacteria or just in time, they grow less and less, perhaps by other chronic illnesses, or viruses. The Canadian Research and Development Center director, Gregor Reid, has been studying inner microbes for 25 years and he feels we need to nourish our gut-friendly bacteria (good bacteria) on a regular daily basis.

Once found only in fermented milk products such as yogurt and kefer, now we have that beneficial bugs (probiotics) are added to juices, cheeses, granola and other snack bars, yogurt drinks at your grocery store. According to a market analyst, Datamonitor, to date, we have 53 new probiotic foods or drinks that have been distributed to the grocery market. Researchers have shown that dairy products are an effective manor in which to deliver probiotic cultures to make their way to the intestinal tract.

Often, people ask how long they should consume probiotics before they notice a difference. Since the probiotics stay in the colon for short periods of time, it only makes sense that probiotics be used on a continuous basis, to nourish our intestinal inner flora.

Did you know that 70% of the body’s immunity system is based on the digestive system? Clinical research for over 20 years has indicated that probiotics can improve digestive system, promote regularity, reduce the growth of harmful bacteria, enchance the immunce system, and strengthen our natural defence system. These reasons prove just how important probiotic nurturing is such a benefit to healthy living. Interestingly enough, literally translated, Probiotic means “for life”.

In ancient times, people lived in a struggle to survive everyday. There was nothing to make life easier—no technology, no tools, just instinct. There was also little to protect them from diseases—no medicine, no hospitals, just instinct, once again. Today, there are already technologies that make life easier, medical supplies to cure all types of pain and ease every little discomfort you may feel. But, many are still unhealthy and many still suffer from diseases. Healthy living is still elusive.

One problem is that there are already too much at present such that most people no longer have to exert efforts to do their daily tasks. There are more cars, for instance, so many individuals seldom walk long distances anymore. Whereas the problem in the past was lack, the problem in the present is over-abundance. Whereas people die of lack in the past (think of malnutrition and famine), many people today die of hypertension and heart problems associated with excess (think of foods excessive in fats and cholesterol).

The Components of Good Health

Many people are in a search of a healthy living, but what is really the component of good health? How do you achieve overall well-being and a healthy life? When you closely look at the concept of health, you will find out that it all boils down to the following three concepts:

• Proper Nutrients. Whereas you will already find a lot of health pills, diet capsules, and all other artificial medicines formulated to promote health today, it’s important to know that the best means to getting healthy is still the basic—fresh fruits and fresh vegetables and natural foods rich in vitamins and minerals. No health pills can ever be better than these.
• Balance. Another key to getting healthy is a balanced lifestyle. It’s not all about food, nor is it all about exercise. It’s a balance of both. Include fruits and vegetables in all your meals, plus meat and fish every now and then. Get your daily dose of protein, iron, zinc, and other vitamins. Exercise regularly. You don’t even need to go to the gym to do this—doing your household chores and going on daily walks is already a form of exercise.
• Proper pace. Being healthy is not all about getting exercise as often as you can or eating as much nutritious food as you can handle. You can’t force it to happen at once. The proper step toward good health is one of consistency and steadiness—just the right amount of food and exercise regularly. It takes a lot of discipline to maintain a consistent routine and a great patience to wait for the result. But at the right pace, you’ll surely arrive at your destination more fulfilled.

By keeping these three components in mind and by making them your starting guide, it would be easy to find the right direction toward good health. And when you finally achieve a healthy living, you’ll realize that the benefits are all worth your effort and time.

Grapes were the food of the Gods in Rome, fed to them by slaves while they reclined in their baths. During the reign of Cleopatra, many natural foods were consumed as well. And we continue to promote the very foods the Romans ate, to boast a wealth of healthy living benefits.

The darker the natural food, the more powerful the cancer fighters inside your body are. Fruits such as blackberries, blueberries, purple grapes, figs, cranberries and good quality plums, should be consumed on a regular basis for a wealth of healthful benefits.

Purple grapes rule. These are the richest tasting table grapes; Choose bunches of these beauties with pliable stems and plump, full-colored berries. Purple grapes can be stored in refrigerator for up to one week, as long as they are unwashed. When ready to serve, rinse well. Purple grapes are like “a little bit of heaven” when put on cereal, waffles or served with light cheese. Chopped grapes make a delightful substitution for syrup or sugar. The healthy bonus is purple grapes contain Manganese and fibre.

Super-sweet figs are one of the fruit family’s greatest delicacies. These deep purple beauties should be free of bruises and have their stems intact in order to keep well as figs are picked when they are fully ripe. Serve at once or chill up to 2 days; return to room temperature prior to serving. Many people cut the figs and put a dribble of honey on them; this is optional. The healthy bonus of figs is they are rich in fibre, potassium and manganese.

Cranberries are such a delight when served fresh cooked with turkey and dressing. These tart, delightful tasty berries can be frozen up to 6 months and they even will last up to 2 months in the refrigerator. Do not wash cranberries until ready to use. Favorite recipes for cranberries are muffins, pumpkin bread, scones, salads, often are used in dried form to snack on. One package of cranberries with 1 cup sugar stirred in and simmered for 30 minutes will provide the most delightful sauce. Healthy bonus of cranberries is they contain Vitamin C and fiber.

Dark plums are delightful to use as a snack, for lunches, canned, made in an upside down cake, or stewed. Good quality plums have just the right balance of sweet and tart flavor. Ripen plums at room temperature; they are ready to eat when the fruit gives slightly when squeezed. Black plums (dark dark purple) are grown usually in Chile, are fairly expensive, but oh so tasty! Always remember to wash any fruits carefully before drying and consuming. Healthy bonus of eating plums is they contain Vitamin C and fiber.

Purple fruits are one of the most scrumptious fruits, very satisfying and offer us a wealth of healthful benefits. Remember these gems in your eating plans for good health.

Epsom salt is a chemical compound that has proven itself for having many uses. One such use that people have discovered for Epsom salt is for promoting good health. Why has Epsom salt come to be associated with healthy living? That is because Epsom salt has magnesium, and magnesium is a very important element in making sure that our bodies are functioning as they should.

By what ways can we use Epsom salt to help keep our bodies in tiptop shape? Here is a list of a few things we can do with Epsom salt for our health.

As bath salts. Epsom salt was first used as bath salts. A good soak in a tub filled with warm water and mixed with two cups of Epsom salt is great for detoxifying the body and relieving stress.

As a foot soak. The feet are often the most abused parts of our bodies, and it is not surprising when we feel pain in our feet. Soaking the feet in warm water mixed with half a cup of Epsom salt can take the pain away from the feet. Doing so also helps reduce the appearance of varicose veins and helps treat athlete’s foot and other fungal ailments commonly afflicting the feet.

As a facial scrub. Epsom salt can be an effective agent in cleaning and exfoliating the face. Exfoliating the face is necessary because it sloughs away the layers of dead skin cells from the face and allows newer, healthier cells to emerge. This is easy to do; all that needs to be done is to mix a pinch of Epsom salt with the facial scrub and massage it onto the face. Afterwards, rinse it off.

As a body scrub. Just like the skin on the face, the skin on the body also needs to be exfoliated. But other than that, massaging Epsom salt all over the body can also promote better blood circulation, soften the rough parts and help in making the skin tone look more even. Just rub Epsom salt on your skin and rinse.

As a hair cleanser. The shampoo, conditioner and styling products that we use on our hair often leave remnants on each strand, leading to product buildup. When product buildup happens on the hair, it can be hard for the nutrients supposedly supplied by shampoo and conditioner to be absorbed by the hair. To clear the hair of product buildup, mix Epsom salt with your shampoo and rinse thoroughly.

These are just some of the uses Epsom salt has that can help promote bodily health. Having some Epsom salt at home is always handy.

Health and wellness benefits are topics that everyone is talking about these days. But, only a few will actually benefit from a healthy and physically fit lifestyle.People who eat healthy and work out will have the benefits of a great bodies and are more physically attractive. They are more likely to have a better sex life and more romantic involvements, which in turn can make them more satisfied with life.

Often, people who eat right are more capable in performing their tasks at the office and are more able to get advancements in their careers. These people do not take leaves of absence and when they do, they use it to have fun and unwind and not to recover from a bad illness.

But despite the numerous benefits that you get from living a healthy lifestyle, why do people still stick to their old habits. One of the reasons is of course the unwillingness. After all, who would want to quit something that you enjoy doing or eating? Most people will not be willing to part ways with what they have been so used to doing. Just imagine saying goodbye to a comfort food or a hobby that makes you happy, will you do it?

Another reason is perhaps the difficulty. Most people attempt to change their ways for various reasons, health problems, relationship woes, even financial but most of the time they don’t see their plans through. They will try for a week and perhaps continue for a couple of weeks and then go back to their old habits after some time. They do not continue with their plans. One of the main reasons why is the lack of desire.

To be successful in combating a bad habit, you need to really want it bad enough. Sometimes, will power is not enough for this. You also need the support of the people around you. This is why a lot of the programs right now that are created to help people change have a network of support system that will help their members.

Starting a healthy lifestyle is not really as impossible as you might think it is. In fact, with commitment and discipline, you can actually start walking the road to health and wellness. It will be hard but just imagine the rewards that you will get in return. There are a lot of benefits to it. You just need to fully commit to it and create your own support system.

What is a phytochemical anyways? In short, phytochemical ingredients are plant-derived compounds, which Julie Daniluk, holistic nutritionist and Co-owner of The Big Carrot Natural Food Market in Toronto, says protect the plants from environmental stresses, including insects, and weather ups and downs. Julie Daniluk says “While phytochemicals are not essential nutrients to human life, it is becoming quite clear that they do infer a great number of health benefits to us as well.”

It is apparent that while phytochemicals offer protection to several chronic diseases, diabetes, cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s, they also play a part in chemical warfare in a variety of ways.

Basically, the researcher’s evidence show phytochemicals are able to reduce the oxidative damage to our cells, that cause various diseases like cancer. Foods such as grapes, dark chocolate and carotenoids, sweet potatoes and green leafy vegetables are examples of phytochemicals full of antioxidant material which help us to diseases like cancer.

Phytochemicals called allicin, found in garlic, contain antibacterial properties. Many people use garlic for their heart health and to avoid getting colds. Fortunately, those who do not want to have the “garlic breath syndrome”, garlic can be purchased in capsules that do not give off the pungent aroma.

According to Julie Daniluk, various phytochemical have the ability to alter enzyme functioning in a way the helps stave off disease. There is a chemical called indole-3-carbonyl which is found in cabbage, broccoli and kale which stimulates enzymes that reduce the effectiveness of estrogen, thereby reducing the risk of breast cancer.

Daniluk says “Some plant compounds such as isoflavones present in soy, can directly alter how hormones (such as estrogen) behave in the progression of disease.” Isoflavones actually have been found to regulate hormonal action.

Even phytochemicals found in chemicals such as capsaicin, which is found in chili peppers, can interfere in the reproduction of cell DNA to prevent the multiplication of cancer cells.

“The best way to give your diet a phytochemical boost is to load up your grocery cart with more fruits and vegetables”, Daniluk says. She recommends we have at least 10 daily servings of produce will provide us with plenty of these disease fighters. Daniluk recommends that we eat multiple coloured fruits and vegetables, as the different pigment plays host to different chemicals. Think of all the healthy recipes you can create with the abundance of foods in the list below.

According to Daniluk, studies have produced results claiming these 10 phytochemicals are effective in helping us to keep healthy living. Each phytochemical will be named, what it does and where it is to be found.

Beta Carotene
Beta carotene supports reproductive health, boosts our immunity, and helps fights cancer. It is found in carrots, sweet potato, squash, cantaloupe and mango.

Lutein
Lutein helps fight age-related vision loss, and is found in spinach, Brussels sprouts, egg yolk, broccoli, and Swiss chard.

Sulforaphane
Sulforaphane helps reduce cancer risk and inhibits bacterial growth and is found in cauliflower, kale, bok choy, broccoli and broccoli sprouts.

Curcurmin
Curcurmin helps diminish inflammation and the spread of cancer cells; evidence has been found that it may slow the progression of multiple sclerosis. Curcurmin is found in turmeric, curry powder.

Lycopene
Lycopene battles prostate cancer and heart disease, and is found in red bell peppers, tomatoes, watermelon, red grapefruit and apricots.

Resveratrol
Resveratrol helps to destroy cancer cells, fights back viruses and may even give a benefit to exercise performance. Resveratrol is found in grapes, berries, peanuts and red wine.

Quercetin
Quercetin helps fight cancer, heart disease and respiratory disease. It is found in capers, onion, apples and citrus fruits.

Anthocyanin
Anthocyanin helps to improve cognitive ability, urinary tract infections and diabetes risk, and is found in berries, eggplant, red cabbage, legumes red and blue grapes.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)

Allicin

Daniluk says that the most important thing is variety of fruits and vegetables. So very many phytochemicals are just being discovered, which makes it difficult to say which is more important. The idea is to fill your kitchen with whole grains, legumes, spices mentioned and more, herbs and nuts and “stay away” from all the processed food that is obviously phytochemical-deficient.

Remember the organic aisle in the grocery store as these items are pesticide free and usually local. This is an interesting concept; Daniluk says that “If the plant does not have to fight off insects, it reduces the need for its own phytochemical defence system.” This is similar to our antibiotic overuse. If we always use antibiotics, soon the so be it, “bugs” become resistant.

All of the phytochemicals mentioned may be difficult to pronounce, but, you will know where to find them after reading this article.

Since phytochemicals have been in the news, they are available for the public to purchase in a supplement form. Talk to your doctor first before taking any form of supplement. Check your refrigerator and cupboard. See what you use and what you need in the form of phytochemicals in your foods. Eating organic foods containing these phytochemicals paints the best picture of the path to healthy living.

You don’t have to be an expert to live a healthy living. The guidelines for living healthy are relatively simple. Where people go wrong is that they fail to stick to them. This should come as no surprise though, especially when you consider all of the unhealthy food choices society has to offer that can derail even the healthiest of lifestyles.

The only way to avoid these temptations is through the use of will-power. You have to be able to tell yourself NO. However, we all have moments of weakness when we want to stray from our healthy lifestyle. But the next time these moments arrive to interrupt your life, remind yourself of the following advantages you have over others because you’re healthy.

Advantage of Healthy Living #1: Energy

Having more energy is an advantage that often goes overlooked because it’s just not easily noticeable. If you take a moment to think about it though, you’ll notice that you actually do have a lot more energy throughout the day. You don’t find yourself slowing down at work, and you even have plenty of energy left to exercise after getting back home. Having this extra energy has the benefit of keeping you from settling down on the couch for long periods, and instead gets you up and active, and thus, allowing you to burn more calories.

Advantage of Healthy Living #2: Stamina

If you’re out of shape and living an unhealthy life style, then you probably get reminded of this every time you walk up a flight of stairs or have to do any time of activity that gets your heart rate moving faster. When you’re healthy, rather than feeling winded after a walk up a flight of stairs you actually feel good, and most likely don’t even notice the effort. Having stamina also mean having great sex as well, and should be inspiration enough to start living better.

Advantage of Healthy Living #3: Being slim

It’s never been fashionable to be overweight and there’s no indication that it will be anytime soon. When you live a healthy life style, one with proper diet and exercise, you maintain a healthy and slim weight. But even better, finding clothes that fit properly will be hassle free. In addition, you won’t have the added concern of worrying about out-growing them in the waist.

Advantage of Healthy Living #4: Not getting sick

People who live healthy lifestyles have stronger immune systems and a stronger ability to fight off disease. In addition, if they have to have surgery, their chances of coming through it successfully are nearly double that of an unhealthy person for the same reasons mention, as well as the fact that the surgeon won’t have the extra task of cutting through too many layers of fat tissue.

The advantages listed above essentially speak for themselves when it comes to deciding to live healthy. But if you’re on the fence, you may want to consider that living a healthy lifestyle is attributed as the biggest reason people live long lives. Imagine being able to add an extra 10 years to your life span. Imagine it, then decide what you would do with it, and then change your life to reach that goal. Defy the odds by living a healthy lifestyle.
