Restaurant promotions are very helpful in launching new menu food items. To host a Healthy Living Campaign for your restaurant is another way to maximize promotions and extend your services to customers on a more personal level.

By choosing different approach such as promoting a healthy lifestyle, you can extend your services to a new breed of clientele. For a successful campaign, different promotional approaches and strategies can help in promoting healthy living to a different target market.

1. Join Trade Shows: For a new set of food items, launching your products in trade shows can be one way to instantly capture a large set of target customers. Since trade shows usually have a set theme, including your restaurant in a refined target market can give more chances of finding new diners in one blow. Specific print materials on healthy living can also help in better promoting. One useful print tool, flyers, can be conveniently printed at online printers like UPrinting.
2. Build Website: Setting up your restaurant website is another way to find new prospects. By going on the Internet, you are provided with your own area to include the necessary information about your business and even more. Thus, to promote your healthy living campaign can be used as the main feature of your website and later on spread into different areas on the Internet.
3. Join Forums: By engaging in health and fitness forums, you can find prospects that are simply in search for such healthy food products your restaurant promotes. One way can be to give health tips and advice to mothers, teenagers, and health buffs and also provide simple and useful home recipes to support your campaign.
4. Sample Food: A soft launch of your food products can work if samples are given in health-related establishments. Some examples can be gyms and health stores where you can ask for a display of print materials or provide a one-time taste testing visit. This strategy might help in capturing target customers who are looking for new food items that fit their lifestyle.

By refining your target market, chances are, you can capture a new set of clientele. Also by getting into different establishments that promote the same purpose as your restaurant, you can have a more powerful campaign and spread your message more effectively to your target market.

It’s no secret that diet along with good food choices will reward you with healthy living. But the main component of that statement is the fact that the two together work much better than each on their own do. And actually, you may have already discovered that when you do cut back on your salt, sugar and fat intake that you start to feel a little better, but you’re really not getting into shape and dropping the pounds you expected to. That’s because your metabolism is fervently working without the added boost it would be getting if you were working out as well. And if you’re exercising, but not eating properly, you might notice that your energy level may still be somewhat lacking. That’s because you’re not getting the right nutrients to sustain an active lifestyle.

The key is to devise a workable plan for yourself that balances your diet which includes the right food choices and a satisfactory level of exercise to give you that healthy living result you’re after. But with so many different diets throwing themselves at us on a constant basis, how do you know which one is right for you? Well, to help you decipher this common dilemma and give you a break from the same old diet plans, let’s take a look at one of newest developments in the weight loss arena to give you a fresh, new option.

GI Diet

One of the hottest diets to enter the scene and that is rapidly growing in popularity across Europe is the Glycemic Impact (GI) Diet. This diet includes foods that will get you well on your way to healthy living. It incorporates food choices that are designed to work together to give you more energy while you lose weight. It’s also said to be great for stabilizing blood sugar so that you don’t experience those highs and lows that result from eating foods with a high sugar content. The strategy behind it is that it combines lean proteins and unrefined complex carbohydrates with healthy fats to speed up your metabolism as it slows down digestion to help you to feel fuller longer. Many of the food choices included in this diet are probably things you’re already eating:

? Grilled Chicken
? Asparagus
? Roast Turkey
? Broiled Fish
? Raspberries
? Almonds
? Cheese
? Couscous
? Pita
? Eggs (Florentine even!)

The GI Diet is actually one that is so seemingly nutritious and delicious, you could easily incorporate these foods into your daily life, for the rest of your life and achieve that level of healthy living you desire. There’s a wide variation of tasty recipes that you could create just from the items on this list alone.

And don’t forget to exercise at least 3 times a week for a minimum of 30 minutes to help you achieve the best results. So now that you have some good information on this new plan, you can weigh the pros against the cons and decide whether or not you think this diet includes the kinds of food choices you enjoy and that will effectively work with you to attain a healthy lifestyle.

Maintaining a healthy body goes beyond physical fitness or the right diet, it also requires that you live in a healthy environment. Our surroundings have a direct influence on the way we feel, how we function and our general health.

Where you live, work and play can all affect you physically and emotionally. A smoggy commute to work followed by a day in a noisy office and an evening in a smoky bar can all work together to have a negative impact on your body.

Remember, you are what you breathe and the toxic fumes from sitting in traffic can nearly triple your risk for a heart attack. In fact, when cities reduce their pollution rates, the rate of cardiovascular illnesses also declines.

Indoor air has its hazards too. Prolonged exposure to mold, dust and cigarette smoke can aggravate asthma or allergies and expose your lungs to a toxic level of air pollution. To live a long and healthy life, you need to live in a healthy environment. Here are 6 tips you can use to improve your air quality:

Get a HEPA filter.

HEPA filters are air systems designed to filter out extremely small dust particles that can worsen allergy and asthma symptoms. Choose a HEPA filter that’s large enough to handle the size of your room, you can also purchase household HEPA systems designed to filter an entire house or workplace.

Stop smoking.

You know why smoking is bad for you – increased rate of heart disease, lung cancer, and stroke, but it also makes you look older too. Yellowing skin, lip wrinkles and crow’s feet are all smoking symptoms.

Declare war on dust.

Tear up your carpets, clear your clutter and start staying on top of dusting. Use a damp mop on wood or laminate floors as you battle dust bunnies.

Hire a mold inspector.

Have your house inspected for toxic molds, like Stachybotrys chartarum – a particularly nasty mold that can grow anywhere there is moisture and air.

Stay out of traffic.

If you can avoid spending long hours sitting in traffic, do so. Try to consolidate your errands to one trip done at a less-busy time of day. If you can work from home, do so.

Fix your leaks.

Water leaks can be a major cause of mold infestations. Leaking water gets, accumulating moisture and creating a breeding ground for toxic molds. Also, check your home’s waterproofing and drainage on a regular basis.

Improving the quality of life through health and nutrition involve following a diet pattern and adequate levels of nutrition to prevent diseases and maintain physical fitness. Issues of malnutrition would be related to deficiencies of vitamins or nutrients and intake of supplements form an important part of disease prevention strategy and helps in improving energy levels (Papers4you.com, 2006). The use of supplements in disease conditions such as high cholesterol levels has been studied to understand the positive and negative impact of dietary supplements on the health of individuals. For instance, vitamin A deficiency can be a major public health concern and many countries implement strategies to prevent such deficiency cases (Whiting et al, 2006). Vitamin C or ascorbic acid can be detrimental when deficient or in excess and recommended doses of Vitamin C have been given by various countries. Public health authorities across the world encourage individuals to change their health status by adopting new behaviors such as giving up smoking or changing dietary patterns. Apart from vitamins and minerals, fatty acids play an important role in modulation and prevention of diseases. However, maintaining a strict dietary pattern and fitness regimen could be explained with the help of social control and cultural values. Fitness levels are determined with measures on speed, strength and flexibility of athletes or even ordinary individuals and energy costs are directly related to nutrition, diet, exercise and physiology (Papers4you.com, 2006). In this context the relevance of the gym culture may be studied as the gym going motivation may be similar to the motivation to follow a strict diet pattern and this in turn have an impact on general health and fitness levels (Bull, et al 2006). This is because any kind of rigorous physical exercise brings about thermo regulation that facilitates heat loss and regulates internal body temperature.
One of the important issues in nutrition and health studies would be prevalence of diseases and diet patterns and lifestyle have a direct impact on the health status of individuals. Smoking for instance has been related to lung cancer and heart disease by analyzing data on mortality rates, smoking habits, lung cancer and coronary heart disease and the health benefits of quitting smoking have also been established in several studies (Saijo, 2006).
An important topic of nutrition studies is life expectancy and health and disease in the elderly. The problem of malnutrition is increased during old age as the elderly may have inadequate diet and poor mobility that prevent them from following a recommended diet pattern. In certain cases, poor nutrition can lead to chronic conditions and poor physical mobility and the elderly would thus need specific interventions and effective treatment patterns. General studies on gender variations in life expectancy and illnesses have shown that women tend to live longer than men but also tend to report illnesses more than men (WHO, 2000).

Most people start the New Year by making resolutions that seldom last beyond the end of January. But, if your resolution was to get healthier, with a little application you can make it last much longer and also reward yourself in the process.

Simply, make it a case of punishment and reward. First, decide what your reward is to be, perhaps a shopping spree, a weekend away, a relaxing break at a spa hotel situated on a beautiful beach, or whatever you decide is justifiable reward for keeping your resolution.

Next, decide what actions you are going to take to make your lifestyle healthier. Resolve to walk a set amount of miles per day, and perhaps schedule visits to the gym a number of times per week. But, whatever fitness regime you decide upon make sure it is achievable, and that it won’t affect you adversely. For example no one can go from complete couch potato to marathon runner in two weeks; so be realistic when setting your goals. Once you’ve done that make a note of them as they will be the benchmark towards earning your reward.

Reward comes when you keep to your goals. For each day that you stay on target with your fitness regime, set aside some ‘reward cash’, perhaps by putting it away in a ‘rewards’ jar. Also, every time you are on the verge of buying something loaded with calories – such as a chocolate bar – don’t do it, but instead put the cash you would have spent in your ‘rewards’ jar as well!

As we know, healthy living involves healthy eating, so it is also important to set yourself a maximum amount of calories to be consumed each day. Stick to the published adult guidelines and then ‘punish’ yourself if you eat or drink too many calories; for every calorie extra that you consume over your weekly set limit impose a small fine. So, if you exceed your calorie consumption by 1,000 calories you need to put the necessary ‘fine’ in the jar, but this time into a ‘charity’ jar and definitely not your ‘rewards’ jar. You should not reward yourself for excessive consumption, but it is good if a charity benefits. Your ‘rewards’ jar should fill with the green stuff because you are sticking to your resolution, and therefore if you slip it should be charity that will benefit, not you!

By incorporating this incentive you can keep your resolution and change elements of your learned behaviour that will result in a healthier you. This way you’ll soon have a jar full of cash and you will soon be able to book up that break at a top spa hotel, or go on an extended shopping trip to get the new clothes needed for the new, healthier you.

Foods with high protein and fiber, a whole range of cereals, greens and vegetables and fresh fruits should be included in our diets for a healthy and disease free life. Consuming 8-10 glasses of water everyday also flushes out unwanted toxins from the system and keeps the body hydrated.

There are specific diet plans for weight loss to suit each and every body type or constitution. The Atkins diet is a popular high-fat and low carb diet. The Glycemic Index diet, originally devised for diabetics is another weight loss diet for those seeking to lose weight. The Hamptons diet is a more nutritional version of the Atkins diet. The Mediterranean diet is becoming increasingly popular in recent times. It advocates use of olive oil and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. The slim fast diet also aims at shedding excess weight in combination with exercise programs. The detox diet aims at detoxifying the body by improving the functions of the kidney, liver and lymph.

Food Guide Pyramids are a widely recognized tool for nutrition education. It is a pictorial illustration of recommendations for the types and amounts of foods in various food groups to be eaten for a healthy daily diet.

The food pyramid visually explains the recommended daily intake of nutrient-rich foods. It also suggests a personalized approach to physical activity and healthy eating. Accessing the web site related to food pyramid gives us valuable information regarding the above factors. You can also enter your gender, age and amount of physical activity whereby you get an estimate of what you need to eat daily in terms of whole grains, vegetables and fruits, milk or yogurt; and regarding consumption of meat or beans. You also get to know the importance of physical activity to be implemented in your daily regimen. You can soon get to see a food pyramid related to children as well online.

From the list of diet plans enlisted above, you can opt a plan that suits your needs best. Sticking to the plan calls for a lot of determination and motivation and for those with these attributes losing weight is not an arduous task.

Since this blog is written for SWAK, I will go way outside my comfort zone and share something that I might not say anywhere else – I’m tired of dieting. I’m tired of counting calories, fat grams, and holding my breath before I get on the scale. But most of all, I’m tired of worrying about what I eat in relation to what I weigh and how I feel about myself. And so, I’ve stopped doing it. I’ve traded all that dieting in for a big dose of healthy living and self esteem.

You see, if we could all be okay with ourselves and say, my big butt may not be best feature, but love the rest of ourselves completely, that would be fine. But that’s not how it goes – at least not for me. Week after week, I put everything on the scale – my outside AND my inside. Like many of us, I allowed thoughts and feelings about a body part run my life and put my self esteem and confidence on the scale too. And that needed to change. So here’s the truth, If we’re not careful, our outside body starts to kill our inside spirit.

For many of us, losing weight has been the distracting focus of much of our lives. It has been our limiting, lying nemesis. Our mind says, IF ONLY I were thin . . . IF ONLY I could lose weight. Ironically, the problem with this thought, from the very first moment, is that weight simply does not get lost. You can’t hide it under the bed and hope everyone forgets about it – or lose it in a closet full of old clothes that don’t fit; because the one who can’t forget – not for a second – is you. And worse, the thing you do risk forgetting is the vibrant, magnificent woman that you are and the incredible life that you are meant to have right now – at this very moment.

So I’m trading in the idea of “losing” weight and replacing it with a healthier idea … using weight.

Using weight. That is a truth that I can wrap my head around and participate in. Instead of frantically waving a magic wand around my belly or rear-end, I plan to enjoy every extra ounce I have and use them for an active, wonderful life. One where I refuse to be distracted with self-loathing ever again.

So here’s my new idea. Think of your body as a bank. You have simply deposited extra energy that you are now ready (and more than willing) to lose. Each pound of extra weight is equal to 3,000 energy units (calories). Everything we eat and everything we do is simply energy in or out of our bank. Remember, also, the universe does not know “fat” or “thin” – it knows energy. Having stored energy in your body is not bad or good to the universe. It just is. Using that energy in creative, self-loving ways can be a beautiful exploration.

You can boldly strike out on a path and explore a life where living authentically simply means non-judgmentally embracing good health and using your energy in purposeful ways.

Your body’s heartbeat and breath are part of the universe’s energy. Lovingly visualize the many creative, purposeful activities you can accomplish with your personal bank of stored energy. Allow yourself to choose a few longer projects that will “express” stored calories from your bank. Breathe deeply and brainstorm. Include service to others and FUN things with friends. After all, it’s your energy bank and YOUR life, spend it wisely.

Feel like you don’t have as much energy as you used to? Stressed out about things that happen both at work and in your personal life? Want to lose the five extra pounds that have taken up residence on your hips? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may need a lesson in healthy living.

The average person spends two thirds of their life either at work, working at home or thinking about work. The majority of the remaining time is spent sleeping. So what can you do in your waking hours to make sure you’re living the healthiest lifestyle possible? We have the answers:

1. Eliminate Stress. Eliminating undue stress can be one of the hardest things to accomplish in your daily routine. On the other hand, it also has the biggest impact on your life. Ever heard the saying ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’? It’s time to put those words into action. And if you still can’t beat the blues, try lighting some candles and taking a bath, planning a day at the health spa, working out or reading a book. These are all known to be effective measures in relieving stress.

2. Quit Smoking. If you’ve taken up the not-so-flattering (not to mention, unhealthy) habit of smoking, we strongly urge you to try quitting. And while we realize that doing so may up your stress levels for a short period of time, the long term effects on your health will be worth it in the end.

3. Eat Healthy. Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet will work wonders for your health and will improve your overall energy. Eating green vegetables, fruit and the appropriate portions of meat and dairy combined with drinking lots of water and milk (to strengthen bones) will not only help you lose those extra pounds but will make you feel like a million bucks as well.

4. Exercise. Working out on a consistent basis will also make you look and feel better. Exercising (whether it’s at a gym or in your home) will increase energy, relieve stress and leave you looking damn good. Who’s going to say no to that?

5. Stay Informed. Health education is a great way to learn about new ways to stay healthy. Watching health channels on television (preferably while running on a treadmill) or reading a health magazine (you know, to relieve some stress) will help make sure you know what’s going on in the industry.

Now that you know the plan, it’s time to put it in action. Good luck – and stay healthy!

Traditional forms of medicine from China, Japan, Indian, and many First Nations groups, have always had a place for meditation, as a constant in their lives, although North Americans are just touching the tip of the iceberg with the information and just how meditation can be the best recipe for healthy living.

Meditation has received recognition for being beneficial for psychological issues for many years, and is now recommended for conditions such as insomnia, depression, anxiety, inability to “focus” and “mental fog.” Some therapists are even using it for conditions such as cancer, HIV, and cardiovascular disease. Just how does this work?

We have two autonomic nervous systems; one is the “sympathetic”, where we go when we are really stressed out, and our blood vessels get constricted, pumping blood to all the extremities so the muscles can work faster and harder; this is know as the “fight or flight” response.
Our respiration and heart rate tend to overwork themselves, and it appears that most of us live in a state of stress; therefore, a fair amount of our time is spent in the sympathetic mode, which is not a good thing.

The other part of our nervous system is our “parasympathetic” nervous system, know as our “digest and rest” response, at which time, our body is allowing the blood vessels to dilate; therefore allowing our circulation improve throughout the body, and more specifically, to our organs and digestive system.

Unfortunately, when we are in the “fight or flight mode”,which is most of the time, our immune system does not function well. One stress simply compounds another, and no end appears in sight. In addition, we have careers, families, other interests that consume our days; just when do we have time to sit and think about nothing? We must commit ourselves to a healthy, easy, no cost practice like meditation, to keep our minds on the right track.

Meditation, by bringing someone out of a sympathetic state into a parasympathetic state, gives the immune system a break and a chance to recover from the “fight or flight” mode, allowing one’s immune system a chance to recover before it becomes totally overwhelmed. Meditation allows our digestive system to perform naturally, and improves the air flow to our lungs, helps to balance our hormones, which means it has a good affect on PMS, menopause and fertility.

According to First Holistic, meditation lowers cholesterol, reduces blood pressure, reduces production of free radicals, which has been linked to many different illnesses and chronic conditions.

Kate Marchesiello, director of Kripaulu Center for Yoga and Health in Lenox, Massachussets, who has been hired by many large corporations to bring meditation to the executives, told her new learners that they will find that if you begin to practice meditation for even 5 to 10 minutes a day, a lot of the chaos and calamity begins to settle. The body uses oxygen more efficiently, the blood pressure drops and at the end of the day, you have a more calm and still mind.

Walking in nature, sitting quietly, painting (art), singing can all be forms of meditation. Focus on what inspires you whether it be a piece of music, a reading from a book, or even dreaming of being on a beach where no one else is; total peace of mind. You can meditate anywhere, and the great thing about meditation for healthy living is that you do not need to put on a pair of tights or be in any special position. Just sit in a comfy position, close your eyes and breathe in and out, until you notice the sensation of the air coming in and out of your nose.

Make up a “mantra”; a simple sound, such as “um..um..um..” As you breathe in, mentally repeat the sound; relax and as you exhale, hear the words “let go. At first, you will think of all the things you have to do; then, as you repeat your mantra, breathe in; breath out, you will notice a release of the tension in the belly, jaws and forehead.

Start meditation slowly. Kate Marchesiello suggests that even the most enthusiastic beginner need only set aside 5 to 10 minutes per day, in the first few weeks. Once you meditate, you will eventually enjoy this mode of relaxation and you are much more likely to increase the time meditation.

Many people meditate in the morning, to start their day off right. Stretch in bed, take a few moments to practice your breathing. Once you are out of bed, start your meditation, with your eyes closed and practice your breathing and your mantra over and over. Once you practice your meditation, when you go for a walk, you will notice the beauty of nature; breath in the fresh air. This has to be the healthiest recipe for healthy living ever.
